Questions

How long should a brainstorm be?
Forty-five minutes is the baseline, and most teams can do a quality brainstorm in that time if ideas are generated silently first. Ninety minutes suits a larger group or when you need time to prototype rough sketches. Much shorter and you skip the share round; much longer and people run out of ideas.
What if someone dominates the brainstorm anyway?
Silent generation gets ideas onto paper before anyone talks. If the same person dominates the share round anyway, you can ask the room what they think before inviting the dominant voice to add more. Protect both air time and thinking time; the combination unlocks ideas that would otherwise never surface.
Can we brainstorm asynchronously?
Brainstorming works asynchronously if everyone generates ideas in writing and you give them at least 48 hours to think. The synchronous share round is still worth having even with async generation, because live conversation and debate often surface connections that individual ideas never made on their own.
